Grape - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan
Where - Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
What - Chateau Musar was founded in 1930 to carry on the 6000-year-old tradition of winemaking in Lebanon. Their wines are infamous and their premium range always impresses with completely unique representations of each year.
The 1998 red vintage is a real standout. The winter preceding the 1998 harvest was a normal Lebanese winter; cold winter, wet spring, warm summer. The grapes were high-quality and some of the healthiest yet.
After a September harvest, fermentation began with four weeks of skin maceration. The wine was aged for a year in oak casks before bottling. The Cinsault really dominates in this vintage, with a lighter overall colour but still that absolutely unmistakable Musar character!
This is a powerful wine with good freshness and strong acidity. Red fruit flavours really power through with a long, spicy finish. It's beautifully balanced between sweet and savoury, with a few really complex flavours of Assam tea, truffles, mint and crunchy autumn leaves.
Rivals the best in Bordeaux, for sure!
Impressive, unique, bold. Vegan. Low intervention. Minimal sulphite. ABV 13.5%.
