Grape - Blaufränkisch
Where - Central Slovakia
What - Fans of Pinot Noir, you've met your next favourite grape. Everything about the Empress screams Pinot, but it is actually the juice of high-quality Blaufränkisch from 30 year-old vines grown in the heart of Slovakian wine country.
This is a proper grown-up wine to be taken a little more seriously than we'd normally suggest. The hand-harvested grapes undergo twenty-eight days of maceration on their skins before three years of ageing in oak. The making process is low intervention from start to finish, with no fining, filtration and only a tiny addition of sulphites.
The hefty ageing has given the Empress a deep, dark and totally mysterious-looking appearance. You will immediately notice big notes of plums, damson and mulberry spice. Dried fruit flavours sneak in too; mainly dried blueberries and raisins.
This would make a great Christmas Dinner wine if you're on the hunt for a bold red that you can be sure will please the whole family.
Luxurious, dark, mineral. Vegan. Low intervention. 13% ABV.
