What - The San Colombano winery of Asti is home to talented winemaker Clementina Cossetti who is the fourth generation to be producing impressive Barbera from the 30-year-old vines. They opt for a lower yield in return for exceptional quality, and it's a pretty damn spiritual experience to try.
For the 2017 vintage, hand-harvested grapes are fermented in stainless steel followed by a double racking and malolactic fermentation. It is aged for approximately 18 months before being released.
The La Vigna Vecchia Barbera d'Asti is a big wine that could be enjoyed now or aged to bring out further spicy undertones. It's an intense ruby colour with a touch of almond on the nose amongst the glorious, sun-filled cherry fruit. It's smooth and dry with a decent acidity; expect flavours of plum, milk chocolate and sour cherry sweets. Top tip: it's really worth opening this for an hour or so before drinking!
