Grape - Olasrizling
Where - Somló, Hungary
What - Northern Hungary is home to Zsirai; a winery famed for their dedication to creating unique, conscientious wine. They work over three different sites, but the Nagy-Somlói Olaszrizling comes from their Somló site where the basalt hills are worked with years of expertise. It's a traditional part of the country and wines produced here supposedly have aphrodisiac qualities.
With the Nagy-Somlói Olaszrizling they've truly managed to produce a wine that stands out. It's a little weird, a little whacky, but it tastes incredible and full to the brim with flavour. Keeping the wine of its lees has really given this an extra few layers of complexity and a super long finish.
This is the sort of wine that you can't help but fall instantly in love with. It is fresh, vibrant and alive with notes of pear, melon, flowers and subtle basalt, rocky minerals. It's quite big and would hold up well against earthy, light meat/mushroom dishes.
Big, punchy, delicious. Vegan. Low intervention. Organic practicing. ABV 13%.
