Grape - Kékfrankos
Where - Barabás, Hungary
What - Reka Koncz's passion for nature started as a small child growing up in Hungary. It never crossed her mind at this age that she might become a winemaker, in fact, "forest warden" and "UFO studies" were initially on the cards. Her enthusiasm began to grow during her university years and learned of natural wines whilst studying in Copenhagen.
Nowadays she is making some of the best natural Hungarian wine ever. It's mind-blowing. The "Change of Heart" is a spontaneous ferment with a skin maceration of 15 days. Her ethos is all about sustainability and protecting the ecosystems of the vineyards. You might notice a strong acidity in this wine which she believes is down the unique volcanic rocks of her terroir. This works to balance the super fruity flavours of the wines.
This natural, biodynamic showstopper is fascinating. You get hit immediately with blackcurrant and blackberry. It is intensely Ribena-esque with a touch of sweet spice and herbs, followed by a purple flower explosion.
Blackcurrant, complex, herbaceous. Vegan. Organic practicing. Low intervention. Biodynamic. ABV 12%.
