Grape - Nerello Mascalese
Where - Etna, Sicily
What - Anne-Louise Mikkelsen runs the amazing Tenuta Di Aglaea winery over in sunny Sicily. Aglaea was the goddess of beauty, splendor, glory, magnificence and adornment; all qualities that Anne-Louise feels Etna possesses. Aglaea often acted as a messenger to Aphrodite which is how Anne-Louise sees herself, as sending messages to Etna through the wine she makes and respect for the land.
She describes the Thalìa as mineral, subtle and charming. It is a 100% Nerello Mascalese head turner. The soils of the vineyards is heavy in minerals with volcanic ashed pressed into deep, porous black earth. She vinifies this particular wine in stainless steel where it undergoes malolactic fermentation, before eight months in old French oak.
It's an absolutely beautiful red wine. It's smooth, soft and delicate with notes of fresh fruit and minerals; cherry, strawberry, pomegranate, smoke, granite and blackcurrant. It would go well with a wide range of food, so get creative! Anything with light meats or mushrooms and you're onto a winner. It's drinking great now, but another five years or so and this will knock ya damn socks off.
Smooth, elegant, flavourful. Vegan. ABV 14%.
