Grape - Jaen, Touriga Nacional, Rufete
Where - Dão, Portugal
What - João Tavares de Pina farms in a beautiful part of Portugal in a granite valley surrounded by forests and clayey soils where nature is both loved and respected.
As a winery, they are very thoughtful of their surroundings, only planting flora that guarantees a balanced ecosystem. These plants have natural protection against diseases and pests, which leaves João and Luísa able to farm without the use of pesticides or chemicals.
They pioneer indigenous grape varieties, especially Touriga Nacional, and aim to produce the clearest representations through low intervention methods and low sulphite addition.
João's wines are known for their sharp tannins and mineral complexity that shows off their unique terroir. Originally, he set out to produce quite traditional wines, but now his style tends to lean towards young, fresh and acidic. What you really get is an unrivalled sense of character.
Forget what you know about Touriga Nacional; this is a light, light, light red wine! Dark fruit-forward, it's summery and a load of fun with huge expression of granite, cherry and cola.
This wine also came to us from a fossil-fuel-free shipment from the Port of Bristol who import wine via sailing ship!
Light, unusual, sustainable. Vegan. Low intervention. Organic. ABV 12%.
