Grape - Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz
Where - Douro Valley, Portugal
What - This is a very im-port-ant wine that needs to ascend straight to the top of your to-drink list. From the year that brought you Wonderwall and Toy Story, here's something even better than that.
Meaning 'harvest' in Portuguese, ‘Colheita’ thus indicates a port that represents a single year of winemaking. We see that here with Warre's 1995 Single Year Tawny port that has been aged for a huge 25 years in wood. Because of the single year origin, you get a real representation of that year's harvest.
The conditions of 1995 in Douro were pretty much perfect. Below-average rainfall, a complete absence of disease with a dry August but rainy September just before harvest. It doesn't get much better than that. Healthy grapes mean high-qaulity wine.
The wine is a beautiful pale amber colour that is attractively clear. It is nice and spicy with flaked almond and chocolate aromas. There is plenty of rose water and vanilla pod notes on the palate with a luxuriously creamy mouthfeel. The finish is long, dry and very moreish.
Warre's recommends serving this port slightly chilled with any sort of sweet dessert, or on its own! And, just a heads up, you'll have around a month to drink up after you've opened the bottle, so no rush.
Luxury, sweet, boozy. ABV 20%.
